I’m deploying to Iraq again and need to figure out a way to store 8 motorcycle in the smallest area possible in my garage. I was thinking of building a rack and have 4 on top and 4 on the bottom.. The garage has 9 foot ceilings so if the rack is less than 6″, I’d have about 4’3″ on each level. Anyone know of a rack or system that could do the job? I was thinking of building a 8′x6′ platform using 4×4′s 2×4′s and some plywood. I’ll load the bikes into a truck then push them from the truck to the upper platform using a ramp to the upper platform. 4 of the bikes are 70′s and 80′s Yamaha XS650 so they don’t weigh a ridiculous amount and they could go on top. Anyone have any better ideas about the platform or a way to get them up there?

depends on if you have equipment to stack them or not…
what i’ve done is used the metal skid bottoms from a dealer, strap the bike to it, and then move them around on a forklift or pallet jack. to stack them, you’d obviously need something to support the weight up on top, but should be easy because the skids have a flat bottom, just string some 2×4′s together doubling them at the corners and cross brace them and you should be set

a harley dealer has always just given me the skids to have them gone so they don’t have to dispose of them… doesn’t have to be a harley to fit the skid, any bike fits. i’ve hauled 8 bikes at a time on a flat deck trailer from florida to canada that way

could always alter direction without stacking like on a small trailer…

one forward, one backward, forward, backward, etc.

I saw a guy from Mexico haul 12 full size dirtbikes on a 6.5 x 16 foot trailer using this method crossways… the diagram below might help where the “I” indicates handle bars and the “——” the rest of the bike…

would also prevent having to fabricate something to stack them on…

Military surplus carries heavy duty racking systems. If you’re near Pa. then try
