TWO motorcyclists were killed in a crash during a race on the Isle of Man today, police said.
James Adam, 28, an officer in the Royal Navy, died at the scene of the crash involving two bikes at about 11am, organisers said. He was from Prestwick, Ayrshire.
Traffic police officer Chris Bradshaw, 39, from Tamworth, Staffordshire, was taken to Nobles Hospital by helicopter but died later.
Both men crashed on the second lap of a race in the Manx Grand Prix.
A joint statement issued by Isle of Man Constabulary and the Manx Motorcycle Club said: “The Manx Motorcycle Club, organisers of the Manx Grand Prix, regret to announce the death of a second rider at today’s Manx Grand Prix.
“Both riders were involved in a racing accident at Alpine Cottage on the second lap of the Junior race shortly before 11am. The race was later abandoned.
“Chris first competed on the Isle of Man in 2004 and finished 37th in last year’s Senior MGP race.
“James first competed on the Isle of Man in 2009, finishing 9th in the Newcomers race and 27th in the Senior MGP.
“The next of kin of both families have been informed. The Manx Motorcycle Club extends their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of both men.
“The incident is now being investigated by the Isle of Man Constabulary, who are preparing a report for the coroner.”
No spectators were injured in the crash, police said.
In a separate crash during the first lap of the race, Douglas based rider Tim Venables came off his bike near Greeba Castle. He was taken by air ambulance to Nobles Hospital, where he was described as being in a critical condition.
It was Venables’ first year as a Grand Prix competitor and he won the Newcomers A race on Monday.
Rider Simon Fulton was awarded the Junior MGP win after the race was abandoned.
